By Night

$10.00

Music: Eddie Russ, Lyrics: Janice Jarrett

One of the wonderful sidemen who played with my LA vocal group, Borrowed Time, had me record this song for a demo. Tony Dumas had often heard my arrangement of it for the group when we were lucky enough to book him to play with us. He was on his way to the Monterey Jazz Festival and listened to the demo track of By Night we made with Billy Childs. When he got back he exclaimed to me “that guy’s a Don Juan!” ‘Yes,” I said. thinking of all those times he heard it when playing with Borrowed Time. When writing the lyrics I had pictured a romantic figure on horseback riding through the night for his rendezvous. A light in her window helps lead him to his liaison, Borrowed Time performed this samba at a fast pace, but here it’s more relaxed for review. The piano version here is supplied by the excellent jazz pianist Sly Slipetsky.

Description

Eddie RussEddie Russ was a fantastic keyboardist and composer who was gigging even as a teenager in Pittsburgh clubs. He spent time in New York and California, but for some years played across Michigan.  Although he worked with a great number of famous musicians, his solo career gave him a chance to record some memorable albums of his own. He received many awards and was a sought-after player and teacher. Russ gained tremendous popularity during his tours of Europe, where his “groove-laden” recordings were big hits. In 1995 a special tribute concert featured his treasured originals and demonstrated the affection held for him as a person. He passed in 1996 due to illness. He is missed.
